The term Greek diaspora often refers to anyone of Greek ancestry living outside of Greece and Cyprus. Diaspora comes from the Greek diaspeirein ‘disperse’, from dia ‘across’ and speirein ‘scatter’.
With Greek colonisation commencing over 3,300 years ago, the Greek diaspora history is vast and has left its cultural imprint on the cosmos as we know it. The Greek diaspora today, is estimated at approximately 5 million, lending itself to the saying “There is another Greece outside of Greece”.
Travelling is always fun. Travelling with a purpose however, is priceless. As a member of the Greek diaspora in Australia, I have travelled to Greece and abroad on numerous occasions, visiting the locations from which my family originate, and have travelled to historically significant locations that my ancestors influenced.
