Italy - Greek Diaspora History Articles

The Greek diaspora history in Italy spans almost 3,000 years, after all, the Romans referred to southern Italy as “Magna Graecia – Greater Greece”. In the regions of Calabria and Apulia, a minority of southern Italians, referred to as the “Griko/Greko people”, claim ancestry from the Ancient Greeks. The Griko/Greko people speak a dialect, containing elements of ancient Doric Greek, Byzantine Greek, and Italian.

Today the Greek diaspora community in Italy is currently estimated at just under 100,000 and is primarily located in Rome and Central Italy. The most substantial waves of the Greek migration to Italy occurred in the 8th and 7th centuries BC, between the 11th and 17th centuries AD, and after World War II.
