Monastery Of The Holy Trinity Meteora

Discover The Monastery Of The Holy Trinity Meteora Greece

The Monastery of the Holy Trinity Meteora Greece (Agia Triada in Greek) is one of the most famous Greek monasteries, having starred in the James Bond film ‘For Your Eyes Only’ as the fictional ‘Saint Cyril’s’. Like most monasteries in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Meteora, the monastery of the Holy Trinity is a structure carved into a rocky precipice.

History of the Monastery of the Holy Trinity Meteora Greece

According to local legend, Dometius was the founding monk of the Holy Trinity, with the monastery being built at approximately 1476. The interior is decorated with magnificent Byzantine frescos.

When first built, the only access to the monastery was via a rope-ladder and the traditional net. In 1925, under the supervision of the monastery’s abbot, Nicandros Stathopoulos, 140 steps were carved into the rock.
